5 DIY Cleaning Products That Will Make Your Home Clean and Green

Spring cleaning doesn’t just mean drinking that detox smoothie or dusting your baseboards! Spring is a great time to upgrade your home to a healthier and cleaner environment by getting rid of some of those toxic household cleaners. To be honest going green in my home is a project of mine but it does take some time to get around to do it all! This month I am adding a few new green DIY cleaning products to my cleaning supplies, not only does it save me some dollars but it is healthier for my body too!

Many popular cleaning products are filled with chemicals, artificial fragrances and phthalates. I know that some of those bathroom cleaners leaves me coughing up a storm. Not only does it negatively impact your respiratory system but your skin is your largest organ and easily absorbs all the harmful toxins. As a result these toxins can disrupt your nervous system and endocrine system, aka your hormones. Phthalates in particular have been linked to reproductive disorders and early onset puberty.(1)

Using Essential Oils

Essential oils are a great way to get beautiful smelling aromatics in your DIY recipes. I love using my doTERRA essential oils because I know that I am getting a high quality 100% pure essential oil. Did you know that doTERRA is the only essential oil company to conduct third-party testing on their essential oils to make sure they are adhering to their Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) stamp of approval?

Here are some of my favourite oils for creating green cleaning products. Don’t have any oils or are running low? Check out my doTERRA page here.

LAVENDER: Great scent to create that clean and relaxing aroma.

CITRUS: Wild Orange, Lemon, Lime, and Grapefruit. These scents smell amazing and are energizing and up-lifting.

PEPPERMINT AND EUCALYPTUS: These scents are so refreshing and help purify the air.

ON GUARD: This is a great all-purpose cleaner blend. It is a mix of wild orange, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus and rosemary – the perfect antimicrobial blend to kill all those surface-dwelling germs. On Guard is the main blend in doTERRA’s lineup of cleaning products which include their toothpaste, soap, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and cleaning concentrate.

PURIFY AND TEA TREE: These oils are great to purify the air and protect against environmental threats.

Here are 5 DIY recipes to get your started.

  • 2 tbsp of the On Guard Cleaner Concentrate (Note: a bottle of cleaning concentrate can make 12 full sized all purpose cleaners). This is way cheaper than any store-bought cleaner.
  • 3 cups of distilled water
  • 10 drops of essential oil (wild orange and peppermint or grapefruit and eucalyptus make really nice combos)

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a spray bottle, glass is best.
  2. Shake well and before each use.

  • 2 cups of water
  • ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol
  • ¼ cup of vinegar
  • 10 drops of essential oil (lemon is a favourite for mirrors)

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a spray bottle, glass is best.
  2. Shake well and before each use.

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup citric acid
  • 1½ tablespoon unscented castile soap
  • 15 drops Purify blend

  1. Stir the baking soda and citric acid together until combined.
  2. Slowly stir in the castile soap and Purify. Stir it until the mixture resembles wet sand.
  3. Pack the pod mixture into a mold and let dry at least four hours. If the mixture expands above the mold, firmly press back down.
  4. Once dry, remove the pods from the mold and store in an airtight container.
  5. To use, simply drop one into the toilet, wait until the pod stops bubbling, and scrub away!

  • 1 cup of hot water
  • 1 tbsp of castille soap
  • ½ cup vinegar
  • ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide
  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
  • 5 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 5 drop lemongrass essential oil
  • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a spray bottle, glass is best.
  2. Shake well and before each use.
  3. This one is great to spray regularly after your shower.

  • 1 ounce of witch hazel
  • 10 drops of essential oil (Purify Cleansing Blend or a mix of Tea Tree, Peppermint and Lavender)

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a 2 oz spray bottle and fill the rest with water
  2. Spray inside shoes and exercise bags

Finally, diffusing essential oils is a great alternative to using air fresheners and candles that are filled with toxic chemicals. Not only do you get the wonderful aromatics but you get the health and medicinal benefits of the particular oil you diffuse.
